Overcoming Childhood Obesity

Childhood obesity has become a real problem in America. Children who struggle with their weight are often teased about their weight and stereotyped as lazy or weak by their peers. Most children can’t overcome obesity on their own. They need a strong support system to encourage them to become healthy.

The first step in helping your child overcome childhood obesity is promoting a positive self-image. When the world is tearing a child down because of his weight, it is hard to maintain the self-esteem necessary to make the changes needed to lose weight. Accentuating the positives instead of the negatives makes your child feel good about herself and gives your child the courage to takes steps to lose weight.

Involve the entire family in the quest to be healthy. Singling the child out as the only person one who is eating salad while everyone else in the family eats pizza sets your child up for failure. Make it a family affair so that your child knows that everyone is supporting his effort to lose weight. Make sure that your child gets at least five servings of fruits and vegetables everyday. Replace sugary soft drinks with healthier choices such as low fat milk. Find healthy foods that your child actually enjoys. A child is more likely to eat something if he thinks it tastes good even if it is healthy for him.

Exercise is also a key to overcoming obesity. Try and involve your child in activities that they enjoy. This will often involve limiting television watching, video games, and computer time, which are probably your child’s activities of choice. Expose your child to new activities until you find one that they truly enjoy doing. Go on walks with your child. This can help them lose weight as well as provide one-on-one time to talk and understand just what your child is feeling and dealing with in their daily life.

Above all, consult with your pediatrician to determine the best course of action. The doctor can most accurately measure your child’s progress and tell you how to get the best results. Obesity in childhood can be overcome with loving support from people who love the child the most.
